Another milestone today, I think.  We didn't practice yesterday because of the snow, so we met at 8:40 this morning.  Played everything pretty well and went off to teach Sunday School.  Came back and the WL said, "We practiced one song in the wrong key!"  He was worried about me transposing on the fly.

Had about 4 minutes, so I sat down and wrote the song out using the Nashville Numbering system.  Played for worship without much difficulty.

Beginning to feel like I am actually playing better and contributing to worship.  You were all right when you said being stretched would help my playing.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Good job!

I would have handles it similarly using the Nashville Numbering system (nns). I do that even with songs I get in advance. Our worship leader often sends the song charts along with a recording.
If the recording is in a different key to what we will be playing, I make a number chart to learn/rehearse with (provided I didn't get a number chart to start with).

As a bass player, knowing and understanding how to use the nns is liberating.

First time I had tried to use the nns.  I believe your assessment is correct...it can be liberating.
