Usually from a chart only because I'm just learning many of the songs we're playing and we don't get to spend enough time together (a whole other topic) to really gel as a team for too many reasons.   I often time as a guitar player also can just look at the leaders hands and know what's being played so worst case I can run to the root and then find my way back if I get in a pinch but having the song on paper or just a simple note sheet or index card nearby to glance at works for me.

Whoo-hoo...getting slightly better at it.  Took a few months of lessons and that opened up some doors for me to understand what is likely to be happening (chord progression, etc.)  That has been invaluable as a tool to help me figure out what is going on by ear and figuring out what I need to be doing.

Small progress is still progress.
